Sheffield United are looking to sign Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell on loan in the January transfer window.

Sheffield United are looking to sign Joe Rothwell on loan from Rangers until the end of the season, although they do face competition from other Championship clubs for the midfielder.

The 30-year-old only joined the Glasgow side in the summer, with Russell Martin signing Rothwell having worked with the player at Southampton earlier in his career.

However, Rothwell’s time with Rangers hasn’t gone to plan. Firstly, Martin has already lost his job, and the ex-Leeds loanee has fallen out of favour since Danny Rohl took over at Ibrox, to the extent that he has failed to make the matchday squad recently, and he won’t be involved when they play Celtic on Saturday.

Sheffield United look to beat Championship rivals to Joe Rothwell signing

Therefore, a January departure seems inevitable, and it has been claimed previously that Sheffield United were among the clubs tracking Rothwell.

And, in a fresh development, journalist Darren Witcoop has revealed that the Blades have made the first move to try and do a deal for Rothwell, as he confirms they have ‘asked’ about bringing him in on loan.

Yet, he states any deal won’t be straightforward, as he adds that there is plenty of Championship interest.

It’s unclear what Rangers’ stance is over a potential loan, as you would imagine they would rather he left permanently given Rothwell is seemingly no longer in Rohl’s plans. The midfielder signed a contract with Rangers that runs until the summer of 2028.

Joe Rothwell would be a shrewd signing for Sheffield United

This is a great opportunity for any Championship club, as Rothwell is a quality player at this level, something he has demonstrated over the years for various clubs, which includes winning promotion.

So, it’s a no-brainer for Sheffield United, and if they could get him on loan, it would be a fantastic bit of business.

For whatever reason, Rothwell’s time with Rangers hasn’t worked out in the way he would’ve wanted, and it’s clear that he needs to leave the club, as he will want to be playing regularly at this stage of his career.

From the Blades’ perspective, if they can get a midfielder to improve the squad, which Rothwell undoubtedly would, then it’s a deal they should pursue.

With Sydie Peck out injured, and Ollie Arblaster having recently returned from a serious knee issue, they are lacking at least one quality option in the middle of the park, and you would expect Rothwell to hit the ground running.

Obviously, there will be competition for his signature, but Sheffield United must do all they can to bring him in, and it would be a coup for Chris Wilder if they can get this over the line.
