Rangers are interested in bringing back former academy star Rory Wilson, which could end their pursuit of Ryan One

Sheffield United's chances of keeping Ryan One from moving to Rangers may have increased, as the Scottish giants are eyeing a return for their former academy man, Rory Wilson.

Derek McInnes' side are on the hunt for a new striker by the end of the transfer window, after star forward Youssef Chermiti damaged his ACL in their recent home defeat against Hibernian last Sunday.

The Gers were already facing a tough task to keep the 22-year-old, turning down what would have been a club record sale as Galatasaray submitted a £21.5 million bid, but now, they're not likely to see him leading their line at all this season.

Rangers had their eye on promising Sheffield United frontman Ryan One to help bolster the frontline in the wake of Chermiti's ACL injury, with Ben Jacobs reporting on Tuesday that a loan-to-buy option had been rejected.

While the report did state that talks were still ongoing, the Scottish giants are keeping their options open, and, according to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, are looking at adding Aston Villa's Rory Wilson to their ranks.

The 20-year-old came through the ranks at Ibrox, but was poached by the Premier League side four years ago, when they were being managed by former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

He's yet to make his senior debut for Aston Villa, but did score five times in four UEFA Youth League outings last season before spending an uneventful loan spell with Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz.

Bailey confirmed that Rangers did enquire about bringing One in, but Sheffield United turned those approaches down. The pivot to Wilson could indicate that they're cooling down their pursuit of the Blades frontman, but there are numerous options that Derek McInnes' side are mulling over currently.

With Sheffield United in a position where they cannot afford to spend big to bring in key attacking players, bringing up exciting youngsters from the fringes of the action should be something that they look to do this season.

The likes of Sydie Peck and Oli Arblaster have proven to be successes in the middle of the park, as have Femi Seriki and Andre Brooks on the right side, the latter joining Norwich City this summer.

One showed glimpses of quality under Chris Wilder during the 2024/25 campaign, and even more while on loan at Lincoln City during the second half of last season, netting five times in just under 650 minutes of League One action.

While the profits they could make on the Scottish Under-21 international this summer could be tempting, keeping him at Bramall Lane would not only bolster their play-off chances this season, but also put them in good stead to make even more money as and when they do sell him, if he takes the right next steps in his development.

It's safe to say that those in the stands at Bramall Lane envision big things for One this season, too, and are hoping that Sheffield United don't accept a bid for the 20-year-old this summer.

A Blades fan account on X replied to Ben Jacobs' report with, "We aren’t stupid enough to even entertain that thankfully." In the replies to that, a fan stated, "Big Star in the making. Needs to be involved this Season."

"We need to put him alongside Bamford and see what he can do," another fan added, believing that One needs to be afforded more starts in place of Tom Cannon. "Spot on. Clubs are just trying it on; this lad will be worth millions in the future," one replied.

Ultimately, Blades fans don't feel that One has had a fair crack at things in their squad just yet, and are looking forward to seeing if he can progress as they feel he can over the upcoming campaign.

In the meantime, they hope that the higher-ups at the club don't cash in on that potential.
