It is fair to say it has been a nightmare season so far for Sheffield United in the Championship.

After losing to Sunderland in last season's play-off final, Sheffield United made the controversial call to replace Chris Wilder with Ruben Selles in June, but the decision backfired spectacularly, and the Spaniard was sacked in September after losing all of his six games in charge in all competitions.

Just 89 days after his shock summer exit, Wilder made a sensational return for a third spell at Bramall Lane, but he has not made the impact he would have hoped for just yet, winning only three of his 10 games in charge, and the Blades remain in the relegation zone.

United are currently the lowest scorers in the Championship having netted just 11 league goals so far this season, and Wilder entered the free agent market to sign former Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford on a short-term deal this week, but it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to solve his side's goalscoring problems.

Sheffield United urged to make bold move for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson in January

When asked which one player he would like the club to sign in January, FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy, from the YouTube channel Blades Ramble, urged Wilder to make an ambitious move for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

Ferguson was one of the most highly-rated young talents in the Premier League after making his breakthrough at the Amex Stadium a few years ago, but after falling out of favour with the Seagulls, he spent the second half of last season out on loan at West Ham United, where he failed to score a single goal in eight appearances.

The 21-year-old's struggles in front of goal have continued since joining Serie A side Roma on loan in the summer, and while he is still yet to find the back of the net for the Italian outfit, Jimmy believes he could be the perfect solution to United's problems.

"A year ago, this suggestion would have been laughed out of town, but the one player I would sign if I could sign anyone from the Premier League is Evan Ferguson," Jimmy told FLW.

"His star has fallen considerably most recently, he's currently on loan at Roma from Brighton, but I think he'd be everything we need right now.

"That's obviously very, very optimistic, but Brighton wouldn't want to loan him to a Premier League rival, I'm sure, and he would play almost every minute for us.

"He would be our focal point as a sole striker up front.

"He would be playing the position that Brighton would want him to excel in.

"I think he's the answer to a lot of our problems, and he probably gives an outside chance of actually doing something this season.

"It's probably very optimistic, but if I could have anybody, it would be Evan Ferguson."

Chris Wilder will have big Patrick Bamford, Sheffield United hope after shock transfer deal

Sheffield United's existing strikers have just three goals between them this season, and all of those have come from Tyrese Campbell, with Tom Cannon, Danny Ings and Ryan One still yet to open their account for the campaign, so the Blades are certainly in need of extra firepower to get them out of their current predicament.

Ferguson has not started a single game for Roma since the start of October, so it looks highly likely his loan spell with Gian Piero Gasperini's side will be terminated in January, but he may be a little out of reach for United, particularly if they are still languishing towards the bottom of the table when the window opens.

It would be no surprise to see Wilder look to bring in at least one more striker, but having just completed a surprise deal to sign Bamford, he will be hoping the ex-Leeds man can deliver over the coming months and reduce the need for reinforcements in January.
