Sheffield United's dismal season continued on Wednesday evening, as they were beaten by a resurgent Southampton at St. Mary's.

Leo Scienza scored the only goal of the game in Hampshire in the seventh minute, with back-to-back defeats in the Championship leaving the Blades 17th in the Championship table after 27 games.

Chris Wilder's side are just four points above the relegation zone and the threat of dropping into League One for the first time since 2018 has not disappeared, despite an upturn in form over the course of the last few months.

Meanwhile, in the background, murmurs of a potential departure for fan favourite Gustavo Hamer are seemingly growing louder by the day, withTrabzonspor reportedly interested in the midfielder and his teammate Harrison Burrows. But if he does leave, then a replacement is needed at Sheffield United.

Mikey Johnston named as potential Gustavo Hamer replacement at Sheffield United

Hamer has been linked with moving away from Bramall Lane for well over a year now, with Leeds United trying their best to bring the Dutchman to Elland Road.

Nevertheless, it now looks as though his time in South Yorkshire is coming to an end and when asked who should come in to replace the 28-year-old, Football League World's Sheffield United Fan Pundit, Jimmy from Blades Ramble, said: "Gus Hamer came on and did okay in Southampton I have to say.

"But it does feel more and more like his time at Bramall Lane is coming to an end. If we were to cash in on him, I would like to go for a more legitimate left-wing option.

"You've got to think of affordability as well, so I'm looking at somebody like Mikey Johnston at West Brom, who I think has always looked lively. We were in for him before he went to West Brom. I think he'd be ideal for giving us a little bit of balance on that side and having more of an out-and-out winger to take on his man down the left-hand side."

Jimmy continued: "Hamer always cuts inside and gives you something completely different. But I think we've struggled to find a purposeful place for Gus in the team, which sounds ridiculous because of the talent he's got. But wherever we're putting him this season, he's not really done the business, unfortunately. So, I would look to somebody like Mikey Johnston if we were to sell Gus."

Mikey Johnston has shone in a poor West Bromwich Albion side in 2025/26

Mikey Johnston joined West Bromwich Albion on a permanent deal in the summer of 2024, following a stellar loan spell during the latter half of the 2023/24 campaign from Celtic. The Baggies spent a reported £3m on the winger, and this season, he has been the shining light at The Hawthorns.

There is no denying that Albion have had a dismal time in the Championship over the course of the last five months, and they are embroiled in the fight against relegation to League One. However, Johnston has been superb, scoring twice and registering nine assists.

The 26-year-old has been excellent, and without his goal involvements, West Brom would be struggling more than they already are, and it is vital that they do not lose him this month.

Nonetheless, if Sheffield United do let go of Hamer in the January transfer window, then the money they gain from the sale should be spent on bringing Johnston to Bramall Lane. With Patrick Bamford leading the line, the Republic of Ireland international would be the ideal wide man to give the striker the support that he needs.
