Sheffield United are monitoring the availability of Leicester City utility man Hamza Choudhury ahead of the January window, who could potentially return to the Blades after his loan stint last season.

The 28-year-old moved to Bramall Lane in last season's January transfer window on a temporary basis, and became a key part of Wilder’s setup on the road to the play-off final.

With Wilder back at the helm, and Choudhury seemingly not key in Marti Cifuentes’ plans at Leicester, having flittered between the starting 11 and the bench so far in 2025-26, glances are being cast at the Bangladesh international once again from the red half of the Steel City, according to a report from The Star.

Hamza Choudhury could pick up where he left off with Sheffield United last season

We asked our Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy from The Blades Ramble YouTube channel, whether it’s a move he’d welcome, and where he’d see Choudhury playing if he did go back to Bramall Lane.

Speaking to Football League World, Jimmy said: “Yeah, I like the thought of Hamza returning, particularly now Chris Wilder's back. He had a very good season with us last year.

“It took him a little while to find his feet, and his best position, but he actually settled at right-back.

“Ultimately, we kept trying different players at right-back last season, and it didn't work until Hamza got there, really, and he was our best performer at right back, even though we brought him in to be a centre midfielder.

“So, if he were to return, I'm sure it would be in that position at right-back.

“At the moment, Japhet Tanganga's playing there, who was obviously a great player for the level, but I think most would say he's probably a better centre-back in the Championship than he is a right-back.

“It feels like a bit of a makeshift position for him at the moment. He's good enough to do it, but I think we'll be looking at a permanent right-back going forward, and Hamza Choudhury fits the bill.”

Another Sheffield United stint for Hamza Choudhury might be best for all parties

Based on The Star’s report, United’s interest in Choudhury is once again likely to be on loan, but the Leicester man only has 18 months remaining on his deal, so the Foxes may be wise to try and push for a permanent deal to cash in while they still can.

Choudhury has perhaps been a victim of his own adaptability; great at filling in in a number of different roles, but on account of that, never given a consistent run of games in any one spot to nail down his place.

At Bramall Lane, he eventually found exactly that, becoming the Blades’ first-choice right-back and excelling.

With Tanganga out of his usual centre-back position to fill in on the right, and a heavy reliance on youngster Sydie Peck with the absence of the likes of Ollie Arblaster, Choudhury would cover two potential issues for the Blades in one move.

Choudhury has called United a “special club” since departing, is said to have made a strong impression on figures inside Bramall Lane and to have enjoyed his time there.

Whether a solution can be found for all involved remains to be seen, but it’s a move you could certainly imagine happening given current circumstances.
