Rabbi Matondo is training with Sheffield United as he looks to find a new club after a short spell with Norwegian outfit Brann.

Sheffield United have already started to make moves in the transfer market as they look to build a team that can challenge for promotion under Chris Wilder.

That won’t be straightforward for the Blades, as they gear up for a third year outside the Premier League, which means they are no longer benefiting from parachute payments and that could render them susceptible to losing a host of prised assets throughout the summer months.

Therefore, Wilder and the recruitment team will have to wheel and deal, with Sheffield United utilising the loan market to bring in Romelle Donovan from Brentford.

Rabbi Matondo training with Sheffield United after spell with Brann

Whilst the Yorkshire outfit will spend some money, and a few big sales could change the budget, the reality is that Wilder will be looking for some bargain deals this summer.

And, one player who is on Sheffield United’s radar is Rabbi Matondo, with the winger on the lookout for a new club after a short spell with Norwegian side Brann.

The 25-year-old, who once cost Schalke £11m, may be known to fans in the UK due to his time with Rangers, whilst Matondo also had a loan at Stoke, and he has represented Wales.

However, his career has stalled recently, and he signed for Brann earlier this year, but reports from Norway have confirmed that he will leave the club after just three appearances.

They also claim Matondo is training with Sheffield United, which will give Wilder a chance to assess the winger close-up before deciding whether to offer the player a contract.

Sheffield United are believed to be in the market for a winger this summer, having already lost Andre Brooks to Championship rivals Norwich City, and Matondo would provide the Blades with real pace down the left flank, and he is capable of playing on the opposite side if needed.

Chris Wilder must be trusted to rebuild Sheffield United

This is a potential signing that would no doubt divide opinion, as Matondo has struggled a lot in recent years, so you could understand why Sheffield United fans may be underwhelmed.

Yet, some would argue that it could be a low-risk, high-reward deal for the club, given Matondo is on the lookout for a new club.

Clearly, he is someone who had a lot of talent, as he came through the ranks at Man City after being snapped up from boyhood club Cardiff, with Schalke paying a big fee for him, and he had years at Rangers after a promising spell in Belgium with Cercle Brugge.

But, there’s no denying his form has dropped off in the past few years, and the majority of Rangers fans were glad to see him depart, having also struggled with injuries at Ibrox.

Ultimately, though, Sheffield United fans need to trust Wilder when it comes to making decisions on recruitment, and it’s obviously a massive bonus that Matondo is training with the club.

That allows him to see the winger on a day-to-day basis, which will allow him to make a more informed decision on whether he could fit into the group, and whether he will add much to the team.

For Matondo, the chance to join Sheffield United would be a great opportunity for him considering how his career has gone, and he will hope to impress enough to get the move as he looks to get back on track.
