Chris Wilder faces a huge summer at Sheffield United, with the manager openly acknowledging the scale of the rebuild required after a deeply disappointing campaign.
The Blades have endured a season well below expectations, and with a bloated squad and inconsistent performances, a major reset is now inevitable and necessary.
Speaking ahead of the recent win against Hull City, Wilder offered insight into one of the club’s brightest emerging talents, Ryan One, who has impressed during his loan spell at Lincoln City. The young striker has played a key role in Lincoln’s automatic promotion, scoring five goals in 12 appearances, and Wilder made it clear that he sees him as part of the club’s long-term future.
“100%,” Wilder said when asked if One will be involved in the first team next season. “He’s got a big future ahead of him, a number nine who can link it up, run down the sides and score. We sold Will Osula for £10m, I’m not putting too much on Ryan but he’s got a big future and his future is with us. He’s here long-term.”
Wilder emphasised the importance of the loan move in accelerating One’s development, highlighting both the competitive environment and the physical and mental demands of playing for a promotion-chasing side.
“We felt getting him out on loan was the right thing to do, great experience. The choice of club was important because he had everyone in League One and League Two chasing him. We wanted him to have a fight to get into the team, and he’s had that. From a physical and mental point of view, playing for three points in a team at the top of the division is invaluable.”
Wilder also spoke about the broader squad situation. Referencing the club’s 2018/19 promotion-winning group, he underlined his confidence in being able to rebuild, but made no attempt to downplay the scale of the job required.
“There’s going to be big changes in the summer,” he admitted. “Six loans going back, contracts not getting renewed, players leaving, and there will be boys who won’t take us forward. Potentially 15-20 players could leave. We’re overstocked as it is. I’m not scared about resetting and going again and I’m confident in building a team.”
That process has already begun to take shape. It has been confirmed that Tom Davies will depart the club this summer. The former Everton midfielder has endured a frustrating spell at Bramall Lane, largely due to injury issues. When fit, Davies has shown glimpses of real quality, arguably operating above Championship level, but his inability to stay available has ultimately made his exit feel inevitable upon the expiration of his contract.
In more positive news, reports from The Star suggest that the club will trigger a 12-month extension in Jairo Riedewald’s contract. The Dutch midfielder has been one of the few consistent performers since arriving, bringing composure, intelligence, and control to the middle of the park. Securing his services for another year looks like a sensible piece of business, and it ensures United have an experienced head in next season’s midfield.
Looking ahead, the Blades are reportedly targeting Barnsley winger Reyes Cleary as they seek to inject more pace into the squad, per Alan Nixon. It’s a move that makes sense for the 22-year-old after he’s had a monstrous term in League One netting six goals and 12 assists in 36 appearances.
Cleary plays on the left flank, which is of course where Gustavo Hamer currently operates for the Blades. But with the summer window coming up, Hamer’s future with United will once again come under question, especially as it will be the final 12 months of his current deal.
The scale of this Sheffield United rebuild is significant, but so too is the opportunity. With a leaner squad and emerging talents like Ryan One, Andre Brooks, Sydie Peck, Oliver Arblaster and Femi Seriki driving United forward, there is cautious optimism that Sheffield United can regroup and mount a serious challenge in the Championship next season.
