Sheffield Wednesday are weighing up a move for former Everton player Tyler Onyango

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to rebuild their first team squad following the takeover of the club by Arise Capital.

The group led by David Storch purchased the Yorkshire outfit at the beginning of May, and have so far overseen a busy summer of transfer activity.

The Owls have completed 12 signings so far, including loan deals for Harry Gray and Mason Burstow from Leeds United and Hull City, respectively.

The most notable permanent addition has been the return of Barry Bannan, with the former captain coming back after signing for Millwall last January.

The 36-year-old spent 10-and-a-half years at Hillsborough, making 470 appearances for the club, and is now back to help restore Sheffield Wednesday to a competitive level.

And it’s unlikely that the League One side’s business will end there, with more activity expected as we approach the final weeks of the summer market.

Sheffield Wednesday take Tyler Onyango on trial

It has been reported by The Star that former Everton player Tyler Onyango is currently on trial with Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old is a free agent after his contract with the Toffees expired earlier this summer.

Onyango has spent time on loan with Forest Green Rovers and Burton Albion, as well as two stints with Stockport County.

Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson was with Stockport when they signed Onyango on both occasions.

The versatile player made a total of 17 appearances in League One across both stints, contributing three assists.

The Owls are weighing up whether to offer the 23-year-old a contract ahead of the new campaign, with injury issues previously hampering his game time.

Onyango featured for Pedersen’s side in a 4-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic in a pre-season friendly last Saturday, coming off the bench in the second half to replace Billy Mitchell.

Pedersen discussed Onyango following his appearance in the defeat to Oldham at the weekend, highlighting his versatility as a potential asset to the first team squad.

However, the Dane kept his cards close to his chest regarding a possible contract offer, with no decision made yet on whether he will sign for the club.

“He can play right centre-back in the back three,” said Pedersen, via The Star.

“He can play as a number six.

“He can play more positions.

“He's training right now with us, and then let's see what's happening.”

Sheffield Wednesday have also signed Sil Swinkels, Louie Barry, Ricardo Santos, Jordi Liongola, Callum Slattery, Mitchell, Joe Lumley, Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Connal Trueman.

The Owls return to league action on 15 August with a trip to face Leyton Orient.

Sheffield Wednesday need both a quality and quantity of players this summer as they look to turn things around under the new owners.

And Onyango could be a good example of adding some depth to the squad for the upcoming campaign to go alongside the quality signings.

The 23-year-old has struggled for consistent game time in League One due to injuries, but his versatility means he can slot into a number of positions quite easily.

So if he can remain fit, then he could prove a smart option as a free agent, even if he maybe doesn’t have the quality to nail down a starting position when everyone is available.
