A brace from Tyrese Campbell was topped off by a stoppage time strike from Tom Cannon to seal all three points for the Blades at Hillsborough.

It has compounded the misery for the Owls, who are currently in administration and sit bottom of the Championship table.

The defeat has left Henrik Pedersen’s side 18 points adrift of safety after just 16 games played so far this season, with a 12 point deduction due to going into administration hurting their chances of survival in the second division significantly.

Wigfield has played a public role for administrators Begbies Traynor, who are actively seeking a new owner for Sheffield Wednesday after their financial mismanagement under Dejphon Chansiri.

Wigfield has written a statement warning Sheffield Wednesday supporters that there is difficult news on the horizon amid the threat of further points deductions.

He believes that this is the worst period that the Owls will have to endure, urging fans to continue showing their support as they continue to work on finding a buyer to take over the club.

“It will not be like this forever,” wrote Wigfield, via the club’s official Instagram account.

“At the same time, I have to be honest: there may be more difficult news coming, including the possibility of a further points deduction.

“I want to be upfront about that because our supporters deserve transparency.

“But I also want to be clear: the period between now and January should be as tough as it gets.

“If we secure a buyer as planned, January becomes a chance to regroup, strengthen, and start building a far brighter future — one this club and its supporters absolutely deserve.

“In the meantime, we must all dig deep. We need your backing for our staff that pour their heart and soul into the club every day — and for Henrik and the players to get through these incredibly challenging circumstances.

“We need your support in the stadium, your energy, your belief — because that is what will get us through this dark period.

“Better days are coming. A new start is within reach. And together, we will get there.”

The 3-0 loss to Sheffield United was a low point for the Owls, with relegation to League One all but certain even at this early stage of the campaign.

Pedersen’s side are bottom of the Championship table, with minus four points from their opening 16 fixtures.

It remains to be seen who will be named as the preferred bidder to replace Chansiri at the helm at Hillsborough, with a 5 December date cited as a possible timeframe for when the takeover picture will become clearer.

Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a trip to face Millwall on Wednesday evening in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Sheffield Wednesday are almost out the other side of this nightmare

Sheffield Wednesday supporters have endured a horrendous 2025, but there is now light at the end of the tunnel.

Chansiri’s time at the club is over, and a new owner should be in place at the start of the new year, which will be a huge boost to morale.

There’s not much that can be done about the first team squad at the moment, which is some further short-term pain they must take before everything can be turned around.

A 3-0 loss to Sheffield United is a big blow given the rivalry and history between the two sides, but fans should still take solace from Wigfield’s statement.
