It was a remarkably busy summer for the Owls after they were relegated from the Championship, whilst Arise Capital Partners completed their takeover of the club.

The state the squad was in meant Henrik Pedersen had to effectively start fresh in terms of building a new group, and Slattery was one of 18 new additions at Hillsborough in the summer window.

Callum Slattery has made a fast start at Sheffield Wednesday

Even though a host of new players have made an impact, Slattery has arguably been the Owls’ standout individual this season.

The midfielder, who was superb for Motherwell last season, has settled very quickly, and he has impressed fans with his all-round game.

Slattery is a player who has shown he is capable in possession, he is forward-thinking with the ball, and he has already found the net twice in seven games to help Wednesday to fourth in League One.

Callum Slattery explains why he joined Sheffield Wednesday after Celtic and Rangers interest

It was seen as a real coup for Wednesday to win the race for Slattery’s signature, because, as mentioned, he had been excellent in Scotland for a Motherwell team that overachieved last season.

So, there was always going to be plenty of interest in Slattery when he was available on a free transfer, but he ultimately decided to make the move to Hillsborough.

That was a return to England for the ex-Southampton youngster, and he explained to the Sheffield Star why he opted for Wednesday, as he also discussed potential interest from Celtic and Rangers after his form north of the border.

“It was all based off my own decision really. I had chats with people like my partner, my old man and my agent. It’s about what's the best option and the bigger picture and and ‘what happens if this, if that’. So, I had a chat with all them.

“But ultimately, it was down to my own decision and it was an easy decision in the end. It's just the size of the club compared to others. And, you know, the ambition of where it wants to go. I think you can see that from the outside looking in - that it's not a League One club. And I think being a part of something like that is really exciting.

“I never really got anything from them properly (Celtic or Rangers), like we never got a proper conversation going. I know there was talk from outsiders saying it and you always think that maybe there might have been something. But I was never too sure to be honest.

“And I wasn't too fussed either, because I think I've done my time up there. I just wanted to change really. They’re two massive clubs, two huge clubs. But I think just from playing in the league up there and stuff, I wanted to experience something different rather than the same 12 teams every season.”

Callum Slattery will be key to Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion hopes this season

Sheffield Wednesday fans will be delighted to hear this from Slattery, and it proves that owner David Storch has a clear vision for the club.

Slattery would have been capable of playing at a higher level, but his comments show that the long-term plan at Hillsborough has convinced him to take what could’ve been seen as a step down for this season.

Obviously, the plan will be to win promotion this season, and, if the Owls are to be successful, Slattery will have a big role to play.

It’s an exciting time to be at Sheffield Wednesday, and now the challenge for Slattery, his teammates and Henrik Pedersen is to deliver on the ambition of the club.
