Sheffield Wednesday have hit the jackpot with the loan signing of Liverpool attacker Kieran Morrison.

Sheffield Wednesday had an extremely busy summer transfer window as they sought to rebuild their squad and one of their biggest coups is already looking to be one that will majorly pay off with the performances of Liverpool loanee Kieran Morrison.

Having been placed into administration last summer, finally ridding themselves of controversial and neglectful owner Dejphon Chansiri, Sheffield Wednesday succumbed to their inevitable relegation in February last season.

Under the management of Henrik Pedersen, though, The Owls did restore some pride with a final day defeat of West Bromwich Albion at Hillsborough ensuring they finished the season back on zero points.

18 new signings this summer have seen Wednesday completely revamp themselves as they seek to become a competitive and credible force once again in League One, aiming to bounce back at the first opportunity.

Aside from a 1-0 loss at home to Yorkshire rivals Bradford City in their first home league game of the campaign last month, Wednesday have been very impressive with four victories in their other four matches and the rest of the division will be concerned that they have not yet truly begun to gel.

As well as that, some of their players that are showing glimpses of quality have perhaps not yet really begun to properly flourish and develop into what they could be this season – and of those is Morrison, who has enjoyed a positive start after his surprise loan move to the third-tier.

In a summer where Sheffield Wednesday had to act quickly to not only pad out their squad but also identify and sign real quality to ensure they would be promotion challengers this season, they managed to pull off the surprise coup of Kieran Morrison.

The attacking midfielder, who also pays out-wide as he did do for Liverpool in pre-season following The Reds’ appointment of former AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.

Morrison was reportedly the subject of interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of the Championship title favourites, while also having interest from Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

It is suggested that Morrison rejected a move to the Championship in order to move to Sheffield Wednesday – highlighting impressive recruitment and powers of persuasion from the Wednesday hierarchy, as well as re-establishing The Owls as the force that they perceive themselves to be in the EFL.

Kieran Morrison could take League One by storm at Sheffield Wednesday

Under pressure as a result of that decision to drop down into the third-tier ahead of a move to a higher level and with the expectation that brings, Morrison would be forgiven for a slow start in South Yorkshire.

However, despite those 18 new signings clearly needing time for the squad to gel and everything to work, Henrik Pedersen has still trusted the 19-year-old Northern Ireland international.

On the bench against Bradford and then Bromley, an assist in their 7-2 annihilation of the latter forced Pedersen’s hand and he was, as was expected, thrown into the starting eleven for their eventual 2-1 win away at Wycombe Wanderers last week.

He remained in the eleven for their next trip, a 2-1 victory away at Peterborough United at the weekend, providing the assist for Yan Valery’s winner in the 79th minute at London Road.

That was the youngster’s first full 90 minutes in professional football and not many would have guessed that, playing in a high pressure environment with an impressive level of maturity as well as genuine effectiveness in the final third.

Plenty of young loanee wingers have taken League One by storm in recent seasons, perhaps most notably Amario Cozier-Duberry and Omari Kellyman at Bolton Wanderers and Cardiff City respectively last season.

Coming through at Liverpool and already on the cusp of the first-team picture this pre-season would suggest that the potential of Morrison is even higher than that of those two – and that will majorly excite Wednesday supporters, who will already be believing they have a gem on their hands.

It wouldn’t be unreasonable to suggest that guarantees of game time helped Wednesday attract the young attacker but another impressive attribute would therefore be Morrison’s confidence to believe he will indeed be guaranteed those minutes at Hillsborough.

That is because, despite being a squad and a club in transition, Sheffield Wednesday boast an incredible amount of depth in forward positions.

In fact, perhaps the early summer marquee addition was Louie Barry, who has previously torn up the division from the left-wing while at Stockport County.

As well as that, Wednesday also possess the likes of Jaden Heskey and Harry Gray for wide positions with Davis Keillor-Dunn capable of playing across the front-line in behind a set of strikers that include Jamal Lowe, Mason Burstow and Ali Al Hamadi.
