Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Rangers winger Scott Wright.

This is according to a report from the Daily Record, which claims that Wednesday hold an interest in the 26-year-old.

The revelation comes amid a busy summer at Hillsborough thus far, with Yan Valery, Ben Hamer, Max Lowe and Svante Ingelsson all all signing while the arrival of Jamal Lowe on a free transfer is imminent, too - Olaf Kobacki is also heading to South Yorkshire too, according to reports in Poland.

It’s little surprise Danny Rohl is conducting such urgent squad surgery given the magnitude of Wednesday’s struggles at times last term, although the German did incredibly well to eventually save them from relegation after it had felt a certainty for much of the season.

With the influx of arrivals at Wednesday as of late, they’re likely to be more competitive next time around and the next on the list is Wright, who tallied 33 appearances for Rangers last season.

The report claims that the Owls have already made their interest in signing the 26-year-old clear as Rohl is eager to complete the transfer.

Rangers are open to the prospect of a transfer, given that Wright only has one year remaining on the contract he signed after arriving from Aberdeen in 2021 and collecting a fee this summer represents a more financially sound alternative to losing him for nothing in a year’s time.

Naturally, Rangers’ stance will also be encouraged by Wright’s status in the Ibrox pecking order, with the winger never having made over ten league starts in a single Scottish top-flight campaign for the club.

He’s been a particularly peripheral figure following the appointment of Phillipe Clement in October, with the former Monaco boss preferring the likes of Fabio Silva, Ross McCausland and former Stoke City starlet Dujon Sterling on the flanks.

Rangers’ Scott Wright would be a handy squad option for Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday still require additional depth out wide, so you can certainly understand the potential benefit of signing Wright - even if he’s not necessarily going to be one of the very first names on the team sheet.

Just how well that would go down with Wright remains to be seen however, given how out of favour he’s been at Rangers for quite some time now.

Wright’s role will surely have to be ratified and ironed out in any forthcoming negotiations, although it’s difficult to see him starting over Anthony Musaba, who scored seven goals and made five assists in an impressive debut campaign last time out.

They’ll want to provide ample opportunity to Djeidi Gassama too, given the French winger’s young age and significant potential.

But when you consider the importance of squad depth in the Championship, Wright would certainly be of benefit to the Owls.

It's very rare that wide players will start each match at this level - as opposed to goalkeepers and most defenders - with inconsistency often being a particular problem, while injuries and fatigue also invariably come into play as the season drags on, meaning that strength in depth is a necessity.
