Marti Cifuentes is reportedly considering becoming the latest Championship manager to leave his post as he considers quitting QPR.

After a spate of managerial departures in the Championship in the last week or so, there looks as though there could yet be at least one more departing the second-tier this summer.

According to a report in The Sun, Queens Park Rangers boss Marti Cifuentes is considering leaving his role as QPR boss this summer following a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s chief executive Christian Nourry.

Cifuentes has grown frustrated with the amount of injuries that have occurred in the Hoops’ squad this season as they sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table with two games of the campaign to go.

In the report, it is believed that Cifuentes is ‘unhappy’ with several elements of the running of the club such as Director of Performance Ben Williams managing “the club’s sports science, medical, physio and nutrition departments remotely from Dubai.”

Following their defeat to Swansea City on Easter Monday, the QPR manager complimented the supporters but suggested he wanted more from the club ahead of next season:

Cifuentes’ time at QPR

The former Hammarby boss joined QPR in late-October, replacing former Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth as the R’s sat tucked inside the bottom three and the relegation places.

Having managed just two victories in their opening 17 games of the 2023/24 season, Cifuentes eventually steered them to safety with relative ease and had sought to build on that this season.

However, the Spaniard has overseen a frustrating campaign at Loftus Road with one win in their opening 16 matches of the 2024/25 season leaving them rock-bottom in late-November.

They have improved as the season has gone on but their 2-1 defeat to in-form Swansea the other day means they are set for another bottom-half finish in the second-tier for a third successive year.

He is generally viewed as a highly-rated coach and is seemingly well liked by supporters of QPR, despite failing to take them into the top-half and even challenge for the top six this season.

Movement in the Championship

Earlier on this week, it was confirmed by West Bromwich Albion that they had parted company with Tony Mowbray, whilst Norwich City had sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup and Jack Wilshere was placed in interim charge of the Canaries.

That came just a few days after Cardiff City had placed Wilshere’s former Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsey in charge for the final three games of their relegation battle, replacing Omer Riza. There are also reports that Daniel Farke could be sacked by Leeds United despite having their automatic promotion to the top-flight confirmed earlier this week.

With so many boards and supporters seemingly clearly unhappy with the direction of their team this season and the growing disparity between the Premier League and the second-tier, Cifuentes’ reported frustration at QPR not matching his level of aspiration may not come as a surprise for many.

QPR will finish this season with a game against Leeds’ fellow top two side and title challenger Burnley at Loftus Road this weekend before travelling to the Stadium of Light to face fourth place Sunderland on the final day of the season next week.
