After a 3-0 win against France in the semi-finals, Knauff, Collins, Brown and Baum are in the final of the U21 EURO, where they meet England.
Germany are through to the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and will meet England again in their sixth match in Slovakia. Eintracht quartet Elias Baum, Nathaniel Brown, Nnamdi Collins and Ansgar Knauff also came up against the Brits in the group stage. While the German youngsters triumphed 3-0 against France, the Young Lions saw off Netherlands 2-1 thanks to a brace from Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott. Brown, Collins and Knauff, who was used as a substitute in the quarter-final against Italy, were all trusted from the start by coach Antonio Di Salvo. And his team made a scorching start, racing into a 2-0 lead inside a quarter of an hour after goals from Nelson Weiper and Nick Woltemade. In the second period, the crowd of almost 12,000 in Košice witnessed an end-to-end battle. Germany had more of the chances as they looked to wrap up the win, while Les Bleuets pushed for a way back into the game but couldn’t get past Noah Atubolu in the German goal.
Battle for fourth title
It was Brajan Gruda, a 72nd-minute replacement for Knauff, who put the cherry on the cake in stoppage time. Incidentally, Jean-Mattéo Bahoya thought he was about to come on due to an injury to Félix Lemaréchal, before it became apparent that Bleuets coach Gérald Baticle had already used up his substitutions.
Germany and England, who both have three U21 EURO titles to their name, will face off on Saturday 28 June at the National Football Stadium in Bratislava. Kick-off is at 21:00 CEST.
