After six back to back wins to start the season, Real Madrid new coach Xabi Alonso will face his toughest challenge yet as his team takes on Atletico Madrid in the iconic Madrid derby tomorrow.

This promises to be an important clash for Alonso as he looks to not only prove himself but also compound the problems for Atleti, who have started the season with just two wins in six matches.

Heading into this Madrid derby, Diego Simeone spoke the press, talking about Real Madrid’s key to success among other things.

Naturally, Simeone was asked about Real Madrid as an opponent and what he makes of the team’s near-perfect start to the season.

In response, the Argentine tactician explained why Los Blancos have been so successful this season, under the leadership of Alonso.

“I live in the present. Real Madrid has improved in their collective play, there is work from the coach to press in higher areas, and that’s why they won all the matches,” he said (h/t AS).

As mentioned earlier, Atletico Madrid haven’t had the greatest starts to a season. The team, therefore, will be hoping star player Julian Alvarez to make the difference up against an well-oiled Real Madrid machine.

Simeone, in fact, was asked about Alvarez and Kylian Mbappe’s form heading into this affair, to which the coach responded:

“I don’t evaluate opponents. I see Julian committed, his teammates love him a lot, and I hope with their help he delivers a great match.”

Finally, Simeone added how gap in the league standings or form doesn’t really matter when approaching games such as the Madrid derby.

“Before the match, it doesn’t matter, but during the game, the quality of the players can make the difference in the result,” he concluded.
