Monaco want to keep Simon Adingra but are unlikely to trigger Sunderland's purchase clause, according to L’Equipe.

The Ligue 1 side are pleased with the 24-year-old's impact and are weighing a cheaper agreement or another loan. His deal contains a €17m option, roughly £14.8m, after Monaco paid a €1m loan fee in January, about £870,000.

Adingra left Wearside in January after limited minutes and made 16 appearances for Monaco, starting 11, mostly as a left wing-back. His loan runs until 30 June.

A drop in Ligue 1 TV income and uncertainty over European competition are said to make a full activation of the clause very unlikely. Monaco also want to keep Wout Faes, whose loan from Leicester includes a €7.5m option, about £6.5m, though not necessarily by using it.

Alternative solutions are being considered, which could involve renegotiating the fee with Sunderland or arranging another loan. The picture is complicated by Adingra remaining under contract on Wearside until 2030.

For Sunderland, his future will be one to watch this summer. Regular involvement in Monaco has kept his value alive, but any hesitation to pay the clause would prompt fresh talks if they want to retain him.
