Simon Wood: Massive credit to the opposition | OneFootball

Leeds United Women’s name will be in the hat for the First Round Proper draw of the FA Cup, after the Whites comfortably beat Stockton Town away from home.

It is now nine wins from nine so far this campaign for Simon Wood’s high-scoring side, who were once more firing on all cylinders to progress in the competition.

In his post-match media duties the boss was quick to credit the hosts, who made it difficult for his team, saying: “I think the shape from the opposition today was really difficult to break down, especially in the first part of the game.

“Massive credit to them because they set up in a way which was going to make it difficult for us, and I think they stayed within that shape to defend really, really well. It took us a while to get that breakthrough.

“Once we got the breakthrough, I think we settled a little bit. At half-time, it was about upping our levels a little bit to what we have been doing since the start of the season.

“I think what you saw in the second half was the game was quite open, and I think it became open as we started scoring a few more goals and we started getting a few more goals.

“It was pleasing to end the game finishing a few chances but I think the build-up play around those chances was the most pleasing thing. But massive credit to the opposition because they made the game very difficult for us today in patches.

“As we progress in this season, as we have already seen, we are going to face different sorts of opposition. We have got to really work hard and we are going to have games where we have got to win the physical battle.”

Looking ahead to next week’s meeting with Norton & Stockton Ancients at Garforth, Wood added: “Being back on home soil does make a difference for us.

“We want to go and put a performance in that shows the supporters what we have been doing this year. We are going to need all the best bits we have seen of us this season in various different games to come out on top.”
