Leeds United Women comfortably beat local West Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town Women at the BD Community Stadium in Garforth, making it five wins on the bounce to begin the new season.

This FA WNL Cup Group T match was dominated by the Whites from start to finish, and the final 3-0 scoreline was more than deserved for Simon Wood’s side, who have been in fine form in the first few weeks of the campaign.

Speaking after the match, Wood was quick to praise not just the quality of his side but also their mindset.

“We're pleased in the fact that I think the messaging we've been giving to the players since last week against Chorley was, "the Cup's got to be a healthy distraction,” the manager began, discussing what he said to his side in the build up.

“And what we've got is obviously eyes on the league, because we've started the league campaign really, really well and we didn't want this to be something that derailed us a little bit from that.

“Last year Huddersfield won our league and they have started life in Tier 3 really well. If we'd had an alright performance but the result hadn't gone our way, it sometimes kind of affects people's mindset.

“We knew it was going to be a competitive game. We knew the level of their squad, let alone their starting 11, just their squad, I think you saw that from the players they brought on.

“So we knew that we wanted to be on it, and we knew we wanted to see things in this game that we also want to see next week, and in every performance we do.

“So really, really pleased with the level of performance. And I think what you've seen there is our level of performance has allowed us to go and play against a very good Tier 3 side and get a really positive result.

“So pleasing, but pleasing from the aspect that just the work rate, the effort, and then the quality level of the players today has been superb.”
