Xavi Simons insists that he is ready to build his own legacy at Tottenham after their 3-0 win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League.
Simons, Spurs’ number seven, scored a penalty to make it 3-0 in the match as the club’s former number seven, Heung-min Son, watched on from the stands.
The South Korean was invited to give a speech to the fans before the match after he left the club for LAFC in the summer.
The Dutch international was asked about what it means to wear Son’s former number: “I didn’t meet him personally before today,” he said. “Now I have, but yes, I think he’s a big legend of the club and it’s a real pleasure for me to take this number and build up my own legacy. So I’m really happy to meet him.”
Mathys Tel played with Son from January this year when he joined Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich. He spoke about his experiences with his former captain.
“This is a lot for the club and for me as well, because Sonny is like my big brother,” he said. “He always takes me, always supports me, always behind me.”
Tel was asked if the win meant more as Son was watching on: “Yes, for sure, because Sonny is a big legend for Tottenham.
“When a guy like Sonny comes, we have to give everything for him, for the fans, for the club and for us as well.”
Mohammed Kudus only played with Son during this summer’s pre-season tour to Southeast Asia, but still had fond memories of the Korean.
“I wish we played together a bit longer,” he said. “I just had a few games with him in the pre-season, but it’s really nice to have him here and he’s a big example to all of us here and how to represent the club and do their best for the club.
“It was a pleasure to have him around the dressing room and then talking a little bit with him. It’s just sad that we couldn’t play together, but yes, that’s football.”
