Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Manchester United’s decision to sign Senne Lammens and believes the goalkeeper has been ‘outstanding’ since joining the club.
The Red Devils initially pursued a deal for Emiliano Martinez but couldn’t reach an agreement with Aston Villa.
United then opted to sign Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18 million. That has proved to be an excellent decision, as the Belgian has hit the ground running.
The 23-year-old has established himself as Ruben Amorim’s number one goalkeeper, starting their previous five Premier League matches. Ferguson has been impressed with Lammens,
He told Raceday RTV: The goalkeeper has been outstanding – he’s only played three or four games and he’s looking really good.
“Of course, (Bryan) Mbeumo and (Matheus) Cunha, the new players from Wolves and Brentford, they’ve added to it.
“I hope the manager gets a bit of success because at United, you need to have success. The signs are getting better. I think back-to-back wins are something teams like United should always expect.
“But having gone through a cycle where the improvement has to come by waiting and being patient, they are enjoying it now.”
The goalkeeping department remained an issue for United following David De Gea’s departure in 2023.
Andre Onana was unreliable and committed several high-profile mistakes during his time at Old Trafford.
Amorim gave Altay Bayindir a chance to stake his claim for the number one spot, but he failed to grasp the opportunity, conceding 11 goals in six games.
But Lammens has brought calmness to the team since making his debut against Sunderland in October.
The Belgian has played a key role in United’s recent success, keeping a clean sheet in his five top-flight appearances.
Amorim’s side are seventh in the league table following the 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
They will face Everton at home on their return from the international break.
