FC Barcelona pushed hard to overturn the heavy first-leg defeat against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final and came close to producing a memorable comeback. The Catalan side won the second leg 3-0 but ultimately fell short of erasing the 4-0 deficit from the first leg, bringing their cup run to an end.
The dramatic effort also came at a cost for Hansi Flick’s side. Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde both picked up injuries during the tie, leaving Barcelona extremely short of options in the full-back positions. With Jofre Torrents still recovering, the German coach currently has Joao Cancelo as the only natural full-back available in the senior squad.
Eric Garcia is viewed internally as the most reliable option to cover at right back, while Ronald Araujo and Marc Casado could also be used as emergency solutions on the flanks if required. However, Flick has already started looking towards La Masia to reinforce his defensive options if the injury situation worsens in the coming weeks.
The first step came when the Barcelona manager called up youngsters Xavi Espart and Patricio Pacifico to train with the first team. Beyond them, SPORT has identified six most promising young fullbacks playing in the reserve team or coming up through the ranks.
1: Xavi Espart
Xavi Espart has become one of the key players for Juliano Belletti’s Barca B. The 18-year-old full-back originally developed as a midfielder before gradually adapting to the right back role during his years in the academy.
Despite the positional change, he has retained the creativity and imagination typical of a midfielder. Espart is reliable defensively but also dangerous when pushing forward, thanks to his acceleration and power, qualities that make his runs from deep difficult for opponents to stop. His versatility even allows him to occasionally feature in midfield for the reserve team.
2: Guillem Victor
Guillem Victor is currently splitting his time between Juvenil A and Barca Atlètic and is widely regarded as one of the most versatile defenders in the academy. The 18-year-old defender is naturally a right back with strong attacking instincts and solid technical ability.
His adaptability allows him to operate on the left flank, as a winger, or even in midfield. This flexibility stems from his strong understanding of the game and consistent decision-making. While he contributes effectively in attack, he is still refining the defensive aspects of his game as he continues his development.
3: Nil Teixidor
Nil Teixidor is considered one of the purest full-backs coming through the Barcelona youth system. The 17-year-old defender combines defensive reliability with impressive attacking output.
He provides width, delivers accurate crosses, and has the stamina to repeatedly run up and down the flank throughout matches. Teixidor also possesses excellent football intelligence, which allows him to read the game well.
At Juvenil A, he competes with Guillem Victor for the starting right back position and can also play as a centre back when needed. After recently returning from injury, he quickly made an impact with an inventive assist against Mallorca U19.
4: Raul Exposito
Raul Exposito has benefited from the recent movement within the youth teams. Guillem Victor’s involvement with Barca Atlètic and Nil Teixidor’s injury opened the door for the 16-year-old to gain regular minutes with Juvenil A.
Originally a centre back during his early years, Exposito transitioned to full back while maintaining many of the defensive qualities of his former position. Known by the nickname Rulo, the Sabadell-born defender is intense, aggressive, and highly committed on the pitch. In addition to his strong defensive work, he also carries a powerful long-range shot and can be dangerous during set pieces.
5: Pol Bernabeu
Pol Bernabeu joined Barcelona from Espanyol as a midfielder at the U14 level before eventually establishing himself as a left back. Now a key player for Juvenil A under coach Pol Planas, the 18-year-old stands out for his technical quality and attacking instincts.
His background as a midfielder is evident in his creativity, passing ability, and strong connection with teammates in advanced areas. Bernabeu rarely misplaces passes and often looks to improve the flow of possession. While his physicality can sometimes be tested by fast wingers, his positioning and concentration help him remain dependable defensively.
6: Jordi Pesquer
Jordi Pesquer is another exciting left-back prospect progressing through the ranks. The 17-year-old combines height, physical strength, and a high-quality left foot, making him a well-rounded option on the flank.
Pesquer can win duels defensively while also offering constant support in attack thanks to his stamina and ability to deliver accurate crosses. He also possesses a powerful shot from distance.
After an inconsistent campaign last season, the defender has rediscovered his form and has become one of the standout performers for Juvenil B under coach Cesc Bosch.
With injuries currently limiting Barcelona’s defensive depth, these La Masia prospects could soon find themselves closer to first-team opportunities as Hansi Flick continues to monitor the academy for potential reinforcements.
