Celtic are trying to bring in Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga today after losing out on Preston’s Ben Davies last night after Liverpool emerged with a late offer for the player who had previously agreed terms with Celtic.
Peter Lawwell was hoping to do a deal on Deadline Day to bring Davies up the road early but the chance to join the English Champions was obviously a more attractive option for the Preston defender who will no doubt drop out of the picture when the former Celtic Star Virgil Van Dijk returns to full fitness.
Liverpool are also looking at adding a second signing of a central defender today – Schalke central defender Ozan Kabak.- so even with their current injury problems Davies could find competition for places in the starting eleven tough.
Tanganga is reported to be keen on a loan move in order to get first team football this season. The 21 year old Tottenham defender who is also wanted by West Brom was an unused substitute yesterday as Spurs recent poor form continued with a defeat at Shane Duffy’s parent club Brighton.
Meanwhile Sky Sports News reporter Vinny O’Connor explains what happened with the Ben Davies transfer: “Preston’s Ben Davies is having a medical at Liverpool this morning. It might not be the only new arrival at Liverpool today.
“We can tell you a little bit about the deal to sign Davies. We’re told a total of £500,000 up front. Structured add-ons as well worth up to £1.1m. That’s based on success with the club, appearances, even an England appearance clause as well and a 20 per cent sell-on on profit clause in the deal,” O’Connor explained on Sky Sports.
“Personal terms are also being sorted today as well. There are no problems anticipated there.
“Of course, we know that Celtic were convinced they had him on a pre-contract and they were understood to be ready to go in with an offer, cash up front, to get him today, but Liverpool nipped in ahead of them. Also, we understand there was interest from Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Burnley, but it is Liverpool who look to have got Davies now.”
