Sky Sports: Chelsea “impressed” by winger who could make January move

Until today’s rumours about a potential bid for Antoine Semenyo came out of the blue, the line coming from Chelsea about January has been very clear – don’t expect any major business.

There will likely be a bit of shuffling around on loan, but probably no more than that. The biggest deal we’ve expected since the summer is a sale of Tyrique George. His Deadline Day move to Fulham in August fell apart because the Whites couldn’t raise funds in time, and while he’s played for us in the meantime, he’s still clearly seen as something of a spare part and an easy way to raise “pure profit” funds for other moves.

Sky Sports’ transfer summary of Chelsea’s plans comes to the same conclusion:

“Chelsea have been impressed by George this season but he wants to play regularly and there is so much competition for places across the front positions, which is limiting his game time,” they write.

“He nearly joined Fulham on Deadline Day and there is expected to be interest in him again.”

Whether it will be Fulham returning for a fresh bid or not isn’t clear – but we expect a few teams to be sniffing around as teams towards the bottom of the league look for attacking options which could change their fortunes for a reasonable price.

In other news…

Part of Chelsea’s success this season has been down to their strength at the back, and among their most effective players there has been Trevoh Chalobah, whose stats are now reflecting what a good player he is.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca remains in the headlines after his explosive comments, and on the London is Blue podcast Matt Law broke down the chances of him leaving for Man City this summer.
