Only joking lads and lasses. However, clocking him as I usually do these days, got me thinking.

Graeme Jones was a canny goalscorer in his day. I didn’t realise how good he actually was, until I Googled him about a month ago.

Gateshead born Graeme actually cut his teeth in non-league football with my hometown club North Shields in the 1991/92 season.

Then after a fruitful spell at Bridlington Town, he got his first break in the Football League at Doncaster Rovers.

He scored a commendable 26 goals in 92 League games for Donny, before switching to the emerging Wigan Athletic in 1996. .

This is where it really took off for Graeme. He became an instant success at the Latics when he scored 31 League goals in his first season, a club record to this day.

Graeme Jones went on to score 44 League goals in 96 appearances for the Latics, before moving to St Johnstone to try his luck in Scotland.

Having returned to England, Graeme later on eventually finished his career with Hamilton Academicals with the 2005/06 season.

I’m glad we have a lifelong Newcastle United fan and a striker on our coaching staff.

Graeme is 54 now but still looks as fit as a butcher’s dog.

Maybe it’s worth ‘Ice-cold Alex’, ‘Flash’ and our midfielders getting some useful tips off wily auld Graeme, to help them start finding the way to goal again.
