Sofyan Amrabat has stepped back from Morocco duty, saying in a social media post he will not be available while head coach Mohamed Ouahbi remains in charge. The 30-year-old midfielder has 78 caps and was a key figure in Morocco’s 2022 World Cup run.

Relations between the pair are strained. Ouahbi was appointed in March, replacing Walid Regragui.

Amrabat described the move as a difficult decision and said he does not feel able to represent the national team under the current head coach. He stressed it is not an international retirement and said he would keep his reasons private out of respect for those involved.

He was selected for the last World Cup and featured in three matches, including one start. At the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil last winter, he again served as a squad option under Regragui.

He is unlikely to feature in Morocco’s opening qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations against Gabon and Lesotho in late September. Amrabat has just joined Ajax after a season at Betis.
