After a stellar World Cup with Cape Verde, 40-year-old Vozinha now faces a slump that could threaten his club and international future.
He led Cape Verde to their first World Cup, reached the round of 32 and shut out defending champions Spain in a 0-0 draw. Foot Mercato said his displays drew wide praise and boosted his stock.
After his Chaves contract expired, he was linked to Inter Miami and Vojvodina before joining Colo-Colo. He began as back-up to 19-year-old Gabriel Maurera and debuted in August with a 3-0 Copa Chile win over Unión Española.
A 0-0 draw with Huachipato brought a clean sheet, then a costly error in the 1-1 with Deportes Concepción on 13 September, failing to clear a corner for Norman Rodríguez to score. Coach Fernando Ortiz defended him, saying it was too early to judge.
Mistakes followed with Cape Verde’s 3-1 loss to Mali, his botched clearance allowing Dorgeles Nene to add their third in a group with Rwanda and Liberia. They need a swift response against Rwanda on Tuesday.
His deal runs to December, with an automatic one-year extension if he plays 50% of matches since joining. With three appearances from nine, the margin is tight as Colo-Colo also played during the international break.
