Some at Newcastle United are ‘pushing for an approach’ from the Magpies for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, but he is not an active target for the club right now.

Newcastle have witnessed major changes in midfield this summer, with Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali departing St James’ Park.

While promising talents have been added to the engine room in the shape of Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur, both are young options and have no Premier League experience.

A view at Newcastle appears to have formed that the club need an experienced midfielder who knows his way around the league and the club recently made a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

While Newcastle were prepared to pay Marseille’s asking price for the Dane, he refused to consider a move to the Magpies.

Now, according to journalist Craig Hope, at Newcastle ‘some are pushing for an approach’ for Brighton midfielder Baleba, who has been discussed internally.

The 22-year-old midfielder has the same agents as new Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle, while Brighton are open to cashing in on him for the right price.

Baleba though is not considered to be an active transfer target at the moment because he is out of action with an ankle issue.

Newcastle however could go in for the midfielder later in the month as they aim to bolster the engine room for Jaissle.

Another possible arrival for Newcastle is Juventus midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, who is drawing interest from the Premier League.

Hull City have asked about the Dutchman, with Juventus not opposed to a departure, while Aston Villa are also interested.

Koopmeiners would add a more experienced midfield option, but he does not have Premier League experience.

With Kieran Trippier having departed St James’ Park, while Emil Krafth also left this summer, Jaissle’s right-back options have been stretched.

Belghali has caught the eye both with his performances in Italian football with Hellas Verona and on the international stage with Algeria.

Newcastle look to still have serious work ahead in the window as they look to fill the holes in Jaissle’s squad.
