There are moments in football that leave you speechless. It could be a last minute winner, a wonder strike from outside the box or a remarkabke goal line clearance to name a few. Football is made and defined by such moments. One such moment occurred last night during Manchester City’s 5-nil win over Sparta Prague at the Etihad. Erling Haaland’s wonder strike in the 58th minute of last night’s Champions League league phase is an early contender for goal of the season. Frankly, you just have to marvel at Erling Haaland’s brilliance.
First of all it must be said that the piece of play from Savinho that set up Erling Haaland’s wonder strike at the Etihad was brilliant. The trickery and dribbling ability from the Brazilian international bamboozled the Sparta Prague defender. He then played a teasing cross into the box for Haaland to pounce. That piece of play from Savinho set the scene for what came next. It was a special piece of skill from Savinho in itself.
But what followed it defied any sense of logic. Erling Haaland produced a finish that will be replayed for years to come. City’s number 9 acrobatically produced a mid air back heel that beat Peter Vindahl in Sparta’s goal. It gave City a 2-nil lead and effectively ended the game as a contest. To sum it up you just had to marvel at Erling Haaland’s brilliance. That’s all you can do after such a moment.
Matheus Nunes perhaps summed it up best when he spoke post game. The Portuguese international said he was left speechless by Haaland’s finish. That about sums the goal up best. Speaking after City’s win Nunes said: “It was an amazing goal. I was speechless after his shot. When he scored against Borussia Dortmund I was watching it on TV, and now to see it live was amazing.”
Pep Guardiola echoed the sentiments of Matheus Nunes when asked about Erling Haaland’s goal. The City manager compared it to Haaland’s stunning strike against Borussia Dortmund during the 22/23 season. Guardiola told the media: “He made a fantastic goal but scored similar goal against Dortmund a couple of years ago with an incredible pass from Joao Cancelo. I didn’t know how it was scored. There was a player in front of me. Yeah, against Dortmund it was quite similar. For a human being, it’s not normal. I don’t know which one is more difficult. For me, both!”
Erling Haaland has produced a catalogue of special moments as a Manchester City player. He added yet another last night against Sparta Prague. Following his stunning goal you just have to marvel at his brilliance. That’s all you can do.
