Harry Kane says moving ahead of Gary Lineker to become England’s record goal scorer at World Cups is a very proud moment.

Kane’s second-half header helped England to a 2-0 win over Panama in their final group stage game of the World Cup, as the Three Lions progressed to the knockouts as group winners.

It was the Bayern Munich striker’s 11th goal at a World Cup for England, taking him one ahead of former England striker Gary Lineker.

“Sorry Gary, I’m one ahead of you now,” Kane joked after the game. “But I’m sure he’ll send some congratulations.

“I’ve said before, one of England’s greatest strikers, especially in the World Cup. To just go ahead of him now, I think is a proud moment for myself and I’m sure he’ll be happy.

“I’ll definitely enjoy it, you never take these moments for granted, and now we look forward to playing again in a few days.”

Kane also says he is confident that England have more to show in the knockout stages, with a clash against DR Congo in the round of 32 up first.

“We obviously started the tournament well against Croatia, areas to improve,” Kane reflected. “The last game (against Ghana) was tough, we actually played okay but lacked that cutting edge.

“Today (against Panama), we had to be patient. I think sometimes people expect teams like England to walk over these teams and it to be an easy game. They made it tough, they’re physical, they’re playing for pride, for their country, so you have to give them credit as well.

“Top of the group, in a tough group, so we just have to enjoy it and hopefully we can keep improving as the tournament goes on.”
