Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez want improved contracts at Chelsea, but sources at the club are plating it down as a “natural” part of the policy.
Today’s piece in the Athletic about Chelsea’s contract situation comes at the right moment – key player Moises Caicedo is agitating for a raise, fellow starter Marc Cucurella is about to hit the two years left mark, and Enzo Fernandez, is also seemingly eyeing up an improvement on his initial deal.
They claim that “sources” have told them that Fernandez and Caicedo “are keen to negotiate improved terms with the club.”

We’re sure they are. That’s the part of the long contract strategy that never quite made sense – you can lock them in for 8 years on a starter salary, but if they do well they’re going to ask for a raise after a year anyway. Just look at what happened with Cole Palmer.
That’s not to say that that makes the idea a bad one – and indeed “Chelsea sources say this is natural and a validation of the club’s size and ambitions.”
Fernandez has a deal until the summer of 2032, and Caicedo has a club option in his deal which takes him to the same time. If they both continue playing as well as they have this season, there’s not much of an argument against giving them more money – although it’s really a question of how much they’re going to ask for.
It’s going to be a very interesting 6-12 months on the contract front as we reach the first friction point of the long contract era.
The fact that the players are asking for money is to be expected – and clearly this policy has some positives as a number of other top clubs (and West Ham) are following suit, as you can read here.
