One of the most influential South American players at Liverpool was Luis Suarez, who became one of the best players in the Premier League and so nearly led the Reds to a league title with his sheer brilliance.

Under Jurgen Klopp, there was a strong Brazilian goalkeeper cohort at Anfield, too. Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Philippe Coutinho all left indelible marks at the club.

More recently, players like Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister have continued the South American presence.

Admittedly, it's just the Argentine left now alongside Alisson. But there could be more South Americans on the way, soon.

Strengthening the defence will be a major priority despite the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet for Richard Hughes this summer.

The young centre-back is viewed as an exciting addition for the future of the Reds, but the overall defensive situation means further reinforcements are likely to be required at Anfield.

Ibrahima Konate is entering the final months of his contract and there has been little progress in negotiations over a new deal, making a departure increasingly likely. Especially with Real Madrid lurking in the shadows.

If he does leave, Liverpool would need another high-level centre-back to maintain depth and quality in the position.

There are also longer-term considerations. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both under contract until 2027, and could both depart come the end of next season.

As a result, recruitment this summer could focus on both immediate cover and players capable of forming the defence for years to come.

And this could see Liverpool return for a long-coveted target in Joel Ordonez, who has revealed that he is a fan of the club and wants to move to the Premier League.

Speaking to Gazet van Antwerpen Ordonez was asked about his future this summer and whether he could move onto a bigger club, and he replied by name-dropping the Reds and the Premier League.

“I hope so. It would be great if I could go to the Premier League. That’s my favourite league, which, given my size, should suit me well. As a child, I was also a big Liverpool fan,” Ordonez explained.

Given Liverpool's need in defence, Ordonez could be an interesting option. He's still relatively young with lots of experience.

The young centre-back has developed well at Club Brugge, where he has shown confidence in duels and composure when playing out from the back. These qualities are exactly what the Reds look for.

His athleticism and potential suggest he could grow into a strong defensive option for Liverpool in the future.
