According to TalkSPORT, Southampton are exploring a move to re-sign former captain James Ward-Prowse, who is likely to depart Championship rivals West Ham this summer.

The midfielder was denied a return on Tuesday, left out of West Ham's squad for their Carabao Cup meeting with Saints. Nuno Espirito Santo said he was fit but omitted, noting he had to make a selection and that several players stayed at Rush Green. He had previously left Ward-Prowse out against Nottingham Forest.

No agreement is in place, and Southampton are assessing the conditions required to bring Ward-Prowse back.

Ward-Prowse has not had an extended run in the Championship, having made 422 Premier League appearances.

Saints remain in the market for midfield help after Shea Charles joined Fulham in a deal worth up to £30 million earlier this month.

West Ham are regarded as tough negotiators, and the finances involved could yet hinder any move. Clubs have until 11pm on Tuesday, September 1, to complete summer business, with Saints away at Birmingham that evening.
