Southampton are looking to bolster their attack heading into next season
Southampton are eyeing up a move for Sturm Graz forward and former Denmark youth international, William Boving.
The Saints endured a calamitous campaign in the Premier League after winning the Championship play-off final just 12 months ago, ending the season with a record-high number of defeats in a 38-game top-flight season (30), as well as only just avoiding the igominy of drawing level with Derby County's well-documented record-low 11-point haul.
However, the South Coast outfit are in for a summer of change as the highly-rated Will Still was appointed as manager ahead of the final game of the season - a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal - which he oversaw at St Mary's, with the 32-year-old taking charge of an English club for the first time after previous stints in France and Belgium.
Plenty of change is to be expected in the coming weeks and months leading up to the first game of the season in August, and Boving could be one of the names added to bolster Still's current attacking options.
According to a fresh report from Football Insider, Southampton are looking to strike a deal for the 22-year-old, who came through the ranks at his hometown club, FC Copenhagen, before moving across Europe to the Austrian Bundesliga outfit in the summer of 2022.
In 111 appearances for Die Schwoazn, the forward has found the back of the net on 21 occasions and laid on 17 assists, including four goals in the UEFA Europa League, which included a brace in a 2-2 draw against Lazio in Rome in October 2022.
It was revealed by Transfermarkt in March that Boving's form at the Merkur Arena had caught the eye of many top-flight sides across the continent, including no fewer than eight German clubs, as well as Brentford, managed by fellow Dane, Thomas Frank.
In Football Insider's fresh revelation, the man who has enjoyed his most potent season in front of goal as Sturm Graz won the Austrian top-flight for the second successive season and just the fifth time ever, is valued at €5m by his current employers, with his contract running until next summer.
Boving netted 11 goals in 30 Bundesliga appearances this season, and started in all eight of the club's encounters in the UEFA Champions League 'League Phase', registering assists against French opposition in the form of Stade Brestois and LOSC Lille, with both games ending in defeat for his side.
As well as coming off the back of the most productive season of his short career thus far, another aspect of Boving's game which could make him a long-term asset for the Saints is his versatility.
The young forward played 18 times in his natural centre-forward position and scored the majority of his goals in those outings, but he also scored four times in 11 games when utilised off the left, which is an area Still could look to improve, as both Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ryan Fraser failed to have the desired impact, whilst Samuel Edozie is set to return from his loan spell with Anderlecht.
However, at such a young age, Boving has shown plenty of promise, and the idea of having his services to call upon alongside previous second-tier hotshots in Ross Stewart and Cameron Archer would give Southampton supporters plenty of cause for optimism.
