Southampton have had a bid worth over 100m krone, around £7.9m, for Viking centre-back Henrik Falchener rejected, according to Norwegian reporter Eirik Nesset Hjelvik.
Hjelvik added the gap in valuation appears too large and that Southampton now seem to have given up on the 23-year-old, with indications the defender will stay at Viking for now.
Championship rivals Wrexham had also been linked, and The Athletic reported earlier this month that they too had a bid turned down.
Southampton are also targeting Elche centre-back David Affengruber, with talks over the fee and a deal possible for around €10m while the Spanish club want €12m, according to Sacha Tavolieri.
The 25-year-old Austrian made 36 La Liga appearances last season, having joined from Sturm Graz two years ago, and is in the final year of his contract.
Southampton want a replacement for Taylor Harwood-Bellis before the window shuts at 11pm tomorrow. Harwood-Bellis is set for a move to Aston Villa, with a medical due today. The package is understood to be an initial £25m plus £5m in add-ons, and the deal could be announced later today.
Southampton signed Keven Schlotterbeck from FC Augsburg last week and he impressed on debut against Millwall on Saturday, although the 29-year-old is not viewed as Harwood-Bellis’s replacement.
