Southampton had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Nathan Jones’ Charlton Athletic after long spells on top, a result that leaves them four points off the play-offs.
Ross Stewart opened the scoring in the first half with a looping header from Leo Scienza’s cross. Sonny Carey levelled from outside the box with Charlton’s second effort on target to make it 1-1. Sainstmarching.com provided the following player ratings.
Daniel Peretz 5, little to do and might have done better with Carey’s strike. James Bree 7 was an attacking threat with five shots. Taylor Harwood-Bellis 7 looked assured and is developing a decent partnership with Jack Stephens, who scored 6 with 97% from 74 passes, while Ryan Manning 5 filled in for the absent Welington without errors.
Flynn Downes 6 produced a steady display, linking well with Shea Charles, which has not always been the case, before his influence dipped after Charles was replaced by Caspar Jander. Shea Charles 7 made his first league start since injury, playing 65 minutes in a more advanced role before being rested.
Tom Fellows 5 saw plenty of the ball but his stepovers and crosses lacked direction. Finn Azaz 5 struggled to influence. Leo Scienza 8 supplied a fine cross for Stewart and impressed throughout.
Ross Stewart 8 led the line impressively, with Cyle Larin pushing for minutes. Substitutes, Caspar Jander 5, Kuryu Matsuki 5, Cyle Larin 5, Sam Edozie 6, Cam Bragg 5.
