Southampton are in advanced talks to sign Dan Neil as he nears free agency, according to Sky Sports.

Neil’s Sunderland exit was set in January when he left on an initial loan to Ipswich Town, who clinched promotion on the final day. He has been assessing options before his contract expires next week, with Rangers previously viewed as early frontrunners.

After a slow start last season, Southampton reached the play-offs under new boss Tonda Eckert, then were expelled after admitting to spying on Middlesbrough before the semi-final and on two other opponents. The club have stood by Eckert as they prepare for the new season, targeting promotion, and he is thought to remain under FA investigation.

Wolves, recently relegated, and West Ham United also retain an interest. At this stage Southampton are viewed as the most likely destination for the academy graduate, who won two promotions at his boyhood club.

Meanwhile, Ouest France reports that Rennes are making progress in their move for Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda.

Mayenda is understood to be open to leaving after spending most of last season as third choice on Wearside, and Rennes had been seen as early favourites for the 21-year-old. The French club have also agreed a new contract for Esteban Lepaul, last season’s Ligue 1 top scorer, and will play in the Europa League next term.

It is not yet clear whether a loan or permanent transfer is being discussed, though Mayenda is thought to prefer a permanent switch. Sunderland, who paid an initial fee of less than £1 million, would likely bank a significant profit that would strengthen their position under the new SCR rules.
