Southampton missed out on promotion to the Premier League after being expelled from the play-offs.

The Saints were set to face Hull City in the final, but were stripped of their place for breaching the EFL’s rules against spying on opposition teams.

But the Hampshire outfit will still be targeting another promotion push next season, even if there is uncertainty over the future of Tonda Eckert as head coach.

There is also speculation surrounding key players at St. Mary’s, and it’s unclear whether the likes of Leo Scienza or Caspar Jander will remain.

Shea Charles is also attracting interest, with Manchester United linked with a move for the midfielder, who joined Southampton in 2023 from Manchester City.

The 22-year-old is reportedly valued at £20 million, with Leeds United also keen, as he enters the final year of his contract.

When asked if Charles would be good enough to play at Man United at this stage in his career, FLW’s Southampton fan pundit Louis Harris claimed that his ceiling would be as a squad player.

He believes it’s a logical connection for the Northern Irishman due to his links to the Premier League side’s technical director Jason Wilcox, but that he lacks the quality to be a regular starter in Michael Carrick’s team.

“I have absolutely no doubt that Charles is a very gifted operator on the ball,” Harris told Football League World.

“He’s extremely calm and composed and he’s able to read the game well.

“When I first heard the link it did surprise me, bearing in mind he hasn’t actually been a starter for last season, seems to be a bit of a backup to Flynn Downes and Caspar Jander.

“But you probably need to take into account Jason Wilcox, who is obviously now Man United’s technical director, and he would’ve been with Charles with Saints and during his City academy days.

“If an offer was to come in that was too good to turn down, I wouldn’t be against it.

“I do think he’d have a big part to play in our promotion push next season.

“But, overall, could only ever be a squad player at best for United.”

Charles joined Southampton from Man City in 2023 in a deal worth a reported £10 million, and he’s made a total of 63 league appearances for the club in that time, all of which came in the Championship.

The 22-year-old also spent 2024/25 on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, helping the Owls finish 12th in the table with 43 appearances.

The Northern Irishman is entering the final 12 months of his contract with Southampton, meaning this could be their last chance to cash in on this transfer interest, otherwise they risk losing him for nothing in 2027.

Man United are in the process of rebuilding their midfield due to the departure of Casemiro as a free agent.

Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount are their other existing options, but there is uncertainty surrounding the latter pair.

This offers an opportunity for Charles, should he join, to stake his claim as a part of the team under Carrick.

However, the club have also been linked with the likes of Mateus Fernandes, and have already agreed a move for Atalanta’s Ederson.

Shea Charles would be a secondary option at Man United

Charles has the potential to cement himself as a starter for Southampton next season, with uncertainty over Jander’s future with the club.

He could play a key role in the Saints’ promotion push, and that regular game time will be massive in his development and improvement as a player.

But the opportunity to join Man United is obviously appealing, even if he would only play semi-regularly.

Carrick’s side will be competing on four fronts next season, including in the Champions League, which should offer him some game time, even if it would be limited, so it’s surely a move he would accept if the right offer came in.
