Southampton’s quiet window could finally stir, with a loan for Divin Mubama from Manchester City said to be edging close, and attention turning to whether they could hijack a midfield move next.
According to Sainstmarching.com, the club have not added to the £9m capture of Lewis Dobbin, confirmed on 15 July, leaving almost a month without a headline signing.
Mubama has hit three pre-season goals for Enzo Maresca’s new-look side at the Etihad, yet is set to join Tonda Eckert’s ranks on loan, with Nicholas Nicholas Oyekunle also heading to Leyton Orient on similar terms.
The striker scored five during a previous Championship loan with Stoke City. If he arrives, he could act as back-up to Cyle Larin, with Ben Brereton Diaz seemingly edging towards an exit.
With Shea Charles moving on, there could be a temptation to hijack a deal for Jordan James. West Ham United, Middlesbrough, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley are keen on the wantaway Rennes midfielder.
At 22, the tenacious Welshman posted 11 goals and four assists last season for Leicester City, who slipped to League One, including a long range effort against Sheffield United that left Michael Cooper with no chance.
Across four Championship seasons he has 20 goals and six assists, and can play as a defensive option, a number ten or out wide, with two goals from the left at Birmingham City. Winning that race would be difficult, but Southampton’s pull should not be discounted as a promotion-chasing squad continues to be built.
