The Saints are looking to strengthen in key areas before the end of the window.
Southampton are now expected to complete a move for West Bromwich Albion's Tom Fellows before the transfer window shuts.
The final days when clubs in the EFL can buy and sell players are always frantic. People at St Mary's are making sure that, up until 7pm on Monday, 1st September, they are as active as possible.
Daily Echo journalist Alfie House had reported that they were keen on the West Brom star, and in a rapid development The Athletic have now said that the two sides have agreed a deal worth around £10 million for the 22-year-old.
Amid their ramped-up interest in the right-winger, midfield maestro Mateus Fernandes is on his way to join West Ham United in a deal worth up to £42 million, and German under-21 Caspar Jander is set to come in as a replacement option. The deal with Nurnberg is set to cost the Saints upwards of £10 million, plus "substantial add-ons", as per Florian Plettenberg.
A reported £15 million move for Middlesbrough's Finn Azaz is also progressing towards completion, and they now look to be bolstering their options out wide too in a big way.
Southampton's interest in the Albion academy graduate had been reported by Football Insider earlier this summer.
Fellows was said to be viewed as an option that the club would look at in case their own promising youngster, Tyler Dibling, left the Hampshire side this summer.
He recently completed an initial £35 million move to Everton, for whom he made his debut against Mansfield Town on Wednesday evening, which has now opened up a spot on the right-hand side that someone like Fellows could fill.
He was also being looked at by David Moyes' Toffees earlier in the window, as per TEAMtalk, but they subsequently haven't pushed to bring in the England under-21 from The Hawthorns.
Southampton have also agreed to include a sell-on clause in the deal for Fellows, as per The Athletic. The breakdown of how the £10 million could be paid to West Brom has not yet been revealed.
Despite not having registered any direct goal involvements in the Championship so far this season, Fellows has once again proved how much of a creative threat he can be in the division. Last season, the wide player logged a joint-league-high 14 assists.
Still has recently stated his desire to bring in a winger, plus a new number 10, before the transfer window shuts on Monday. The latter of them should be covered off by the signing of Azaz, if all goes well with that deal.
Aside from Ryan Fraser, Southampton don't have many in-favour players who can slot into these positions on the pitch and give the head coach a bit more tactical flexibility.
What Fellows will provide, on top of that, is as close to a guarantee of production at this level as you can get. He hasn't been surrounded by top strikers in the early years of his career with West Brom, but has still managed to find ways to create opportunities for his team to find the back of the net.
