Southampton remain in the frame for Lech Poznan centre-back Wojciech Mońka ahead of the January window, with strong competition emerging.

OnTheMinute reports that the Championship side are tracking the Poznan-born 19-year-old, with Sunderland, Brighton and Hove Albion and Eintracht Frankfurt also in the race. No bid has been made, but a mid-season move is being considered.

Mońka, Lech’s number 27, was named Ekstraklasa defender of the season as Niels Frederiksen’s side won the title last term, and he has recent Europa Conference League experience.

Southampton have yet to keep a clean sheet in the Championship this season despite Daniel Peretz in goal. He registered seven shutouts from 20 games on loan last season, but none from eight league matches so far.

The 2-1 defeat at Wrexham featured an own goal from Keven Schlotterbeck and a costly duel lost to Kieffer Moore, though the German has largely impressed since leaving Augsburg late in the window. Adding Mońka could provide depth and competition, or even a partner for Schlotterbeck.

Any arrival might push loanee Zach Abbott further down the pecking order, which is a consideration as Southampton assess their defensive options.
