Wolves and Birmingham must push to beat Southampton to a deal for Tottenham striker Will Lankshear.

Southampton are set for a busy summer transfer window as they look to win promotion to the Premier League under Tonda Eckert.

The south coast side will start with a four-point deduction as it was part of their punishment as part of the ‘Spyagte’ fallout, but there will still be a belief that they can go up.

After Eckert was named as Will Still’s successor, Southampton’s performances and results improved dramatically, and they also played some great football.

However, if Saints are going to make that next step and seal a return to the Premier League, it’s clear that they need reinforcements, and one player who has been linked with the club is Will Lankshear.

The Spurs striker excelled on loan at Oxford last season, scoring 11 goals in what was a tough season for the U’s, who were relegated.

But, Lankshear enhanced his reputation, and whilst it remains to be seen whether Spurs will sanction a loan or a permanent move, it would be a coup for Saints if they could bring Lankshear to St. Mary’s Stadium.

Yet, it wouldn’t be a surprise if rival interest emerged in the 21-year-old, and here we look at TWO Championship clubs who should try and muscle in on a potential deal…

2 ? ? Wolves

It has been suggested that Wolves are also tracking Lankshear, and it’s a move that would make a lot of sense for the club - and perhaps the player.

Raul Jimenez has returned to Molineux, and he will be the main man this season, but, at 35, the Mexican international isn’t the long-term answer.

Meanwhile, Tolu Arokodare is expected to leave amid interest from Fiorentina, and whilst Sasa Kalajdzic could play a role after a successful loan with LASK, his injury record is a major concern.

So, you would expect Wolves to be in the market for a physical number nine, and Lankshear fits the profile, and his age means he should be exactly what the club are looking for.

Plus, from Lankshear’s perspective, Wolves could be the ideal fit, as Jimenez’s arrival means he won’t be thrown into the deep end, where there is huge pressure to get goals from the off.

As well as that, he could learn a lot from the Mexican international, who has played at the highest level, and Lankshear could then be ready to become a key player in a year or two, by which time he could have blossomed into a very good all-round striker.

1 ? ? Birmingham City

Birmingham had a slightly disappointing campaign last time out as they struggled to sustain a push for the play-offs.

It appears the club are keeping faith with Chris Davies, as they have recognised that solid foundations are in place, and it’s now about adding a few quality players that can help the club bridge the gap to the top eight, at a minimum, this season.

Whilst a few areas need to be addressed, there’s no denying that Blues need a striker.

The signing of Kyogo Furuhashi has not worked out, with the ex-Celtic man expected to leave. Meanwhile, Marvin Ducksch did reasonably well, but he didn’t always convince, and his age means he isn’t the long-term answer.

With Jay Stansfield excelling behind a number nine, it means Birmingham only really have August Priske as a physical focal point, and whilst he struggled last season, there will be a belief that he can come good.

But, it’s clear he needs support, and Lankshear would be great competition, and the Spurs man would back himself to take a starting spot in the XI, and he could be the ideal striker to take Birmingham
