Members of Spain’s squad have condemned racist comments by former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy about the France team, drawing criticism from within La Roja ahead of their World Cup semi-final.

"I am not aware of this matter, but if they play for France, they are French, whatever their skin colour," said Spain and Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi. "We must show tolerance towards everyone, because we all deserve respect," he told RAC 1.

Rajoy had written an opinion piece in which he complained that France did not have French players in its squad.

Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias also spoke out from the Spain camp in response to the former leader’s remarks.

Spain face France on Tuesday at 21:00 in the World Cup semi-finals.
