Spain took on the Netherlands in a tense affair earlier today, to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup. The game went to extra time, and had a fair share of drama. Spain dominated the game, attempting 28 shots in total, compared to 10 for the Netherlands.
The Netherlands won a penalty in the 62nd minute, but it was later cancelled after intervention from VAR. The scoring was opened late on when Spain scored in the 81st minute as Mariona Caldentey slotted home from the spot.
The Netherlands only found an equaliser in the 91st minute, as Stefanie Van der Gragt hammered home a shot from 18 yards out. The game went to extra time, and Spain clinched it when Salma Paralluelo scored with a shot that went in off the post.
The result in this game means that Spain will take on Sweden in the next round, with the chance to make it to a World Cup final Down Under.
