Spain vs. England will be the first fixture to kick off the reign of the 2026 World Champions. A familiar foe in England, whom they defeated in the UEFA Euro 2024 final to kick off their golden era, awaits in the group stages of their Nations League opener. Spain vs. England: The New Cycle

Both nations enjoyed successful, deep runs in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Spain, of course, became World Champions. England had to settle for semifinalist after falling to Argentina in the penultimate hurdle. If not for Messi’s other-worldly heroics, we were on course to see a rematch of the Euros final on the biggest stage as well. It just goes to show that these two, alongside France, are the most consistent and best teams currently playing soccer, filled with stars who always show up on the grand stages.

Spain’s summer was flawless, an incredible tournament from start to finish, where they lost zero games and conceded only once in the entire tournament. Most of their squad from the 26-man list that went to the World Cup has been retained, and Luis de la Fuente has signed an extension until 2032, guaranteeing him a chance to manage at his home World Cup in 2030. It’s all sunshine and rainbows in España, while England are still trying to get a sense of their identity.

The Nations League is the only tournament final that Luis de la Fuente has ever lost, going down to Portugal on penalties in 2025. However, he already claimed the 2023 Nations League the cycle prior, his first trophy with Spain and a taste of what was to come.

The Ballon d’Or Question

Spain vs England will be the last high-profile fixture played before the voting for the Ballon d’Or officially closes. Eight Ballon d’Or 2026 nominees are part of the two squads: Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Ferran Torres, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Cucurella for Spain, and Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane for England. However, the spotlight falls brightly on two of those names, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal.

Both of these star forwards have had exceptional seasons, and will go head to head for the first time this season on the very last day that Ballon d’Or voting remains open. Lamine Yamal has, of course, won the biggest prize in soccer, but he has also added a La Liga and a Supercopa de España to his name during the past year while scoring 20-odd goals.

Harry Kane, while also winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, stands out for something completely different.

The England captain has scored 73 (!) goals this past season, and won the Bundesliga Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe for his goalscoring exploits.

While Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal are guaranteed to be in the top five, perhaps even the podium, we must not forget the exploits of people like Kylian Mbappe, Rodri and Lionel Messi. This might be the toughest Ballon d’Or to call in recent years.

England vs Spain: Head to Head and Facts

Surprisingly, La Roja are not the dominant team in this fixture, owing to much of England’s success in the 1960s. The Three Lions and La Roja have met each other a total of 28 times, with the English winning 14 games, drawing three and losing 11.

In the last 10 fixtures between the teams, however, England have only managed to win three times.

Goals can be guaranteed in this fixture, as the last time these teams played out a goalless draw was over 30 years ago, back in 1996.

Spain enters the match on an incredible 38-game unbeaten streak dating back to March 2024.

England’s first-ever defeat against a foreign opponent away from home was a 4-3 loss to Spain back in 1929. The rematch of that game saw England win 7-1, Spain’s heaviest defeat to date.

Team News and Predictions

Luis de la Fuente has largely recalled the majority of the World Champions except for a few. Joan Garcia and Pedro Porro are out with injuries, while Borja Iglesias and Gavi were dropped. Rounding it off is Marcos Llorente, who retired, making it five players from the World Cup not joining the squad. Two uncapped players in Roberto Fernandez and Ivan Fresneda also join up with the team.
