Spain head to Tbilisi on Saturday with the opportunity to clinch their place in the 2026 World Cup finals, needing just a single win to all but secure qualification from Group E with two round of matches remaining.
The Spanish team has been flawless so far in Group E, claiming victory in all four fixtures to accumulate 12 points. Positioned firmly at the top of the group standings, Luis de la Fuente’s squad would effectively confirm their spot in the World Cup with a win over Georgia, regardless of Turkey’s result against Bulgaria, thanks to their vastly superior goal difference.
The European champions face this crucial fixture without their brightest young talent, Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona forward withdrew from the squad following a minor groin operation, a medical procedure that caught the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) off guard, as they were not notified in advance.
The federation publicly expressed their surprise and concern after learning that Yamal underwent a radiofrequency treatment on November 10 to address pubic discomfort. This unforeseen development has forced manager Luis de la Fuente to call up Jorge de Frutos from Rayo Vallecano as a late replacement for the sidelined Barcelona star.
The Spanish squad also contends with additional injury setbacks, including Rodri, Pedri, and Nico Williams. Pedri’s absence is particularly felt, as the midfielder is set to be out for up to six weeks due to a hamstring problem. Despite injuries depleting key options, La Roja’s squad boasts considerable depth and quality.
Leading the attacking line is Ferran Torres, an experienced international with 22 goals from 51 caps. In midfield, Arsenal pair Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi are likely to continue as primary architects, controlling the tempo and linking play effectively.
Possible Spain starting XI: Simon; Porro, Le Normand, Cubarsi, Cucurella; Merino, Zubimendi, Ruiz; Oyarzabal, F Torres, Baena.
The match will kick off at 5pm BST on Saturday, 15th November.
Viewers in the United Kingdom can watch the match live through the PPV service on Amazon Prime.
