Spain continue their defence of the UEFA Nations League with a quarter-final tie against the Netherlands.
La Roja travel to Rotterdam for the first leg this evening, aiming for a positive result at De Kuip ahead of Sunday’s return on Spanish soil. Luis de la Fuente’s side will start as favourites with Spain on a 16-game unbeaten run in all competitions. That run includes success at last summer’s European Championship as Spain won Euro 2024.
However, Spain have beaten the Netherlands just once in the last eight encounters, dating back to 1983. That said, Spain’ sole victory in that time was a famous one. Andres Iniesta’s extra-time winner decided the 2010 World Cup final between the sides in South Africa.
There’s a first call-up for Bournemouth teenager Dean Huijsen, who has been included in the squad after Inigo Martinez’s withdrawal.
Huijsen could make his international debut against his birth nation, having represented the Netherlands at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Spain.
The 19-year-old is joined in the squad for the first time by Real Madrid’s Raul Asencio, who has enjoyed a breakout campaign at the Bernabeu this season.
Barcelona defender Martinez was one of three withdrawals, alongside club teammate Marc Casado and Bryan Zaragoza.
Spain predicted XI: Simon; Porro, Cubarsi, Le Normand, Cucurella; Ruiz, Zubimendi, Pedri; Yamal, Morata, N. Williams.
The Netherlands host Spain in the first leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final on Thursday 20th March 2025. Kick-off at De Kuip is 19:45 GMT.
The game will not be televised in the UK. It is available to stream live via the Viaplay International YouTube channel.
