Real Madrid’s situation has gone from worrying to openly alarming in the space of just a few days.
The idea that a change on the bench would instantly restore order, confidence, and results has collapsed completely.
Instead, the club find themselves eliminated from the Copa del Rey in the round of 16 by Albacete, only four days after losing the Spanish Super Cup final and making the decision to part ways with Xabi Alonso.
The defeat marked a disastrous competitive debut for Alvaro Arbeloa, who had arrived with high expectations.
Any early optimism evaporated quickly as Real Madrid once again looked disjointed, fragile, and mentally broken.
The reaction across Spain was immediate, but few responses were as direct and unforgiving as that of Josep Pedrerol on El Chiringuito.
Opening the programme with a scathing editorial, Pedrerol painted a bleak picture of the current state of the club. Setting the tone, he said,
“This is what we have. A broken dressing room. And there are no miracles here, my friend, no miracles.
“Ah, Arbeloa, you’re not to blame. You’re not to blame. Today, what you already knew has been confirmed, because you knew it. Let’s begin,” Pedrerol began the program.
Appealing directly, Pedrerol added, “It’s clear, if you’re a Barça fan, you’re going to stay and watch us, for sure.
“It’s a good night for you. And if you’re a Madridista, you have to stay and watch us.”
He then doubled down on his analysis of the team’s decline, reminding viewers that the warning signs had been there for months.
Continuing his argument, Pedrerol added, “We have been talking about Madrid’s situation all season. A team that wasn’t playing well and was broken, it’s confirmed.”
Crucially, Pedrerol refused to place the blame on Arbeloa, arguing that expecting immediate change was unrealistic.
“It’s easy to point the finger at Arbeloa. Do you think he can do something in one day?
“Can he change the dynamic, run and play better? Do you think he’s to blame for anything?”
The journalist even praised Arbeloa’s attitude in defeat, concluding, “Bravo Arbeloa for saying ‘I’m to blame’.
“The easy thing would have been to say ‘give me time’. Arbeloa is facing up to it and will continue to do so until they break him,” he concluded.
