Tottenham survived on the final day of a turbulent Premier League season, edging Everton 1-0 in a tense, nervy encounter that secured their top-flight status and consigned West Ham to relegation instead.
Spurs knew a point would be enough to guarantee safety, and from the outset there was a sense of urgency that had often been missing throughout a difficult campaign. The early stages were frantic, with Conor Gallagher going close when he drilled into the side netting after Everton briefly opened up.
João Palhinha then wasted a golden chance from close range before the breakthrough finally arrived just before half-time. Mathys Tel delivered a corner into the box, Palhinha’s header struck the post, and he reacted quickest to bundle the rebound over the line despite Everton protests.
After the interval, Tottenham largely controlled proceedings, keeping Everton at arm’s length while news filtered through that West Ham had taken the lead elsewhere, briefly adding tension to the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Everton offered little going forward for most of the contest, looking flat and lacking sharpness, though they did threaten late on. The closest they came was a superb stoppage-time save from Antonín Kinský, who clawed away Tyrique George’s effort to preserve the lead.
When the final whistle blew, relief swept through the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs confirmed survival, ending a season of struggle but avoiding a dramatic and unwanted drop into the Championship.
