Tottenham Hotspur could be without James Maddison when they host Newcastle United on Saturday, according to The Telegraph.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club started 2026-27 with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the weekend, and they are back in action on Wednesday.

Spurs play Charlton Athletic in the second round of the Carabao Cup before welcoming Newcastle in their second Premier League game of the new campaign.

Maddison came on in the 68th minute against the Bees, replacing Mikey Moore.

He has needed checks on a knock sustained in the game after the 29-year-old fell awkwardly on his shoulder after coming on.

It was his first appearance since featuring in only three games last term due to a knee injury he sustained during a friendly against Newcastle in last year’s pre-season.

Maddison only played in one pre-season match, featuring for 45 minutes in a closed-door 2-2 friendly draw against Hoffenheim on August 16.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is already sweating on his fitness and the Italian will hope he can count on him this season.

The Lilywhites start September with a trip to Nottingham Forest before hosting Everton and Aston Villa in their other games of the month.

Maddison should be available for those games should he miss the Newcastle match.

Spurs need their best players available going forward this season following a woeful start to the campaign.

Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohamed Kudus have yet to return to full fitness, while Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain long-term injury absentees.
