Arsenal showed how to deal with a newly promoted team. Man United did not. That was awful.

Let’s talk about Mainoo. Few years ago he was a key part of United’s midfield and was playing Euros finals for England. Bossing it. Form was excellent. Ten Hag ditched him. Amorim ditched him. Carrick comes in, brings him back in and he plays well so….

Tuchel took him to a World Cup ahead of Wharton, Gibbs-White, Foden, Palmer, stretch that to probable fringe players like Scott so he clearly sees a player yeah?

Round 1 – Hull away. New signing Andre Santos plays alongside new signing Youri Tielemens in his position. How does that make him feel ? I can’t wrap my head around it. Will we ever know what it is about him ?

The rest of them: Rashford offered more in his half game cameo than I thought he would. Dorgu offered nowt. Santos was pants. Heaven could not pass a football forwards, always looked sideways or backwards. Maguire showed him how to play. The rest were plodding and not worth the typing. This squad is severely lacking and it’s had a truck tonne of cash spent on it!

I’m sure everyone knows the joke about the two hikers being chased by the bear and one stops to put on his running shoes. The other remarks that he’s not going to outrun the bear, but he is told that “I only need to outrun you.”

I doubt that there are any sensible MUFC fans who thought we were going to compete for the title this season but… damn! I suppose it is better that we were reminded, sooner rather than later, that the Club’s true ambition hasn’t been, for a number of seasons, to win the title. Qualifying for one of the European Cups by finishing in the top 8 will be sufficient to keep the bean counters happy. So, while every other top Club has realized the going rate for top talent is 100 million pounds, MUFC throws teenagers and 50 million pound scraps to the fans to keep them quiet. If it is not clear to you by now, just look at the level of investment into the Women’s team this season.

Look at the current squad and ask yourself who, if any, would get into Arsenal, City, Liverpool’s First XI? Not relevant if you are only planning on “outrunning” teams like the “B’s” or Villa.

If you know that is the ambition of the Club, how motivated do you think you are as a player when the new guys are no better and not even threatening your place in the team. You can keep turning in a 4 or 5 out of 10 performance every week with no repercussions. Wayne Rooney said it himself that this was, for him, the biggest sign that the Club was in decline. Mid-table mediocrity seems to have identified as the Clubs “sweet spot” but unfortunately the fans didn’t get the memo!

So strap in fellow MUFC fans. I fear this is going to be another Season of Discontent. Adidasmufc (Perhaps we would be better off just playing friendlies around the World, sort of like the Harlem Globetrotters)

The train has not yet left the station Well there we have it. Season over already after one match, following a defeat against *does a double take* Hull? Bloody Hull?! Ah, it’s the hope that kills you.

All joking aside, Hull deserve credit for defending well and taking the couple of chances that came their way. They had great energy and all did their jobs to close down and leave no space for us to play in. They didn’t have to do much to score, worryingly, as we were not sharp and didn’t attack the ball – something we did well last season.

Most of the midfield and attack were not on it today at all. The speed of play needs to be much quicker to break down a team like that who are well organised and sitting in. Bruno and Tielemans were ineffective, Cunha went walkabouts too much to be playing up front (Mbeumo should have started as the 9), and Dorgu fluffed his lines once or twice getting onto crosses at the back post. At least Rashford looked dangerous.

Plenty of work to do, obviously a poor performance but it is early days, and we are much better than that showing. Frustrating when you look forward to the season starting and that gets served up. Did have to laugh when the stadium announcer advised that the train back to Manchester had been cancelled. Very apt. Garey Vance, MUFC

Spurs, that I’ve not written in for a little while due to reevaluating my life and various vices, ailments, and  problems over the summer. 41 now, time to take stock, consider what changes need to be made, and focus on the next chapter etc.

90 minutes watching that nonsense has reminded me that I only really need to deal with one lifelong habit.

Tzolis looks direct and useful. Strevs, AFC, Canada 

The opening weekend that was And we’re off ! Letting the frothing begin and the after the Lord Mayor’s transfer window clean up start…..

Arsenal – nice easy start and slipped into expected gear . Tzolis looks good

Cov – toughest of starts and did ok . No need to panic

Forest/Leeds/Sunderland/ipswich/Everton /Palace – all basically picked up where they left off – not much to get over excited / foaming at mouth about … all results could have been predicted if games were played now or mid season

Hull – at home ( which is the only place they’ll get points) and they got new season bounce against Utd ( will come to them )

Brentford – home form always great and not unexpected result – the manner of play was what stood out but this needs to be held up against the opposition ( will also come to them )

Man Utd – glory glory .. hasn’t been seen for coming up to a generation … blind optimism and Bruno will be player of year nonsense …. The team is not good enough chaps . All talk of being brilliant for last third of season was a wet dream … the reality is Utd are average and a mess… Santos couldn’t get in Chelsea team regularly and Tielemans is not world class ( actually I always thought he looks unfit but gets away by scoring an odd worldie or assist ) . Then there’s the Rashford issue …. The man is a walking distraction and is ( and has been ) the new Aubemayang …. Get rid and have a happy squad …. No point picking on Carrick – the suits can tell him what to do and he has to suck it up ( and no, another new guy wouldn’t change the cycle !!! )

Lastly Totteringham – oh dear oh dear … the usual crazy optimism after buying some new toys was there for us all to see – and lovely bitter Jamie O’Hara is instantly back to his dark place – now here’s the real problem, as diametrically opposed to Carrick as could be , De Zerbi has the suits by the balls … they panicked and now have nowhere to run to … the man was begged to come in but here’s the symptom – De Zerbi like most of his signings isn’t up to it !!!! What is his actual pedigree ? His in match and post match demeanour could have been Ange/Frank or Igor ….. muted resignation and acceptance … it will soon be a half billion spend and a small improvement ( yes they will get better but not much )…

Fernandes ( from relegated WHU), Tonali ( from struggling Newcastle ), Robertson ( old and surplus at Pool ), Van Hecke ( did ok at settled Brighton ) , Senesi ( not wanted by Bournemouth and no-one else was battling to get him !) – these are average journeymen and are not going to get Spurs much higher in table ( 11th ?) so let’s all calm down and just accept that it’s going to just be a continuation of the last 5-10 years with Citeh and Arsenal in top 2 and because it’s always the way Manu / Pool / Chelsea a long way behind in 3/4/5 ….

So mailboxers calm down … nothing to see here and hope Sky pick your favourites for a lot of Monday games so your weekends aren’t ruined like little J O’H ( 13 and 3/4’s) Gary – (btw – something did happen that was different/ exhilarating and new over the summer – Mayo won the All Ireland ( after 75 years , a curse and 11 runners up ) now there’s something to get your knickers in a twist about – seriously YouTube the game …. Committee meeting I’m a Liverpool fan and I just read Lewis’ evisceration of Liverpool’s squad in the mailbox… I couldn’t be more in agreement. Liverpool’s squad building committee has gone from the god squad (getting puff pieces written about them in the NY Times) to doing a very good impression of United in the post-Fergie dark ages.

What happened to the moneyball Robertson signings? The completely unheralded signings of Fabinho and Jota out of the blue?? Now it seems to be nothing but a drip, drip of rumours to the Daily Mail about how we’ve nearly managed to get PSG to agree to €200M transfer for two players they don’t rate… it’s a shambles. Savi business How on Ryan Goslings green earth does Savinho cost 75mil up front. He cost 40 and never plays. I know the market is insane but seriously how does an unwanted players value double in 2 yrs. Stating the obvious here but it should….decrease?

For the confused, when determining the size of Stans margarita maker refund, the officials decapitate a chicken on a wheel-of-fortune style board. Where it finally falls dead on the board determines bailout size or insolvency…. ultimately stan ends up with a refund of $90trillion for a drinks machine costing hundreds of dollars.

I can now only imagine spurs negotiators this summer taking to the chicken board when deciding how much to bid for Savinho et al. There can be no other explanation for £85m for 1 goal and 1 assist in the prem last season. If he was 16 maybe… but he isn’t.
